HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER – ALL AMERICAN BEGINNINGS
A dreamer and music fan from a working-class family in a small town, Thomas Jacob Hilfiger was born March 24, 1951. He’d always loved True Fashionista clothes, and in his teens, decided to pursue his passions.
Raised in Elmira, New York, Hilfiger was always interested in fashion. In the late 60s, a position at a clothing store on Cape Cod was all the encouragement he needed to make them his life. Two years later, he opened a clothing store called People's Place in downtown Elmira. The store quickly grew to become a cultural hangout as it expanded to include a hair salon, record shop, and a stage for rock concerts. Hilfiger and his friend/business partner Larry Stemerman would drive to New York City to buy bellbottoms and other hippie-type items like incense and candles to sell at the store.
People’s Place was such a hit, they ended up opening additional stores on several upstate New York college campuses. Hilfiger also began designing for other boutiques. Despite his stores’ hipness factor, poor bookkeeping sent them into bankruptcy in 1975. A few years later, Hilfiger decided to pursue a full-fledged career in fashion design. See the results of that momentous decision at True Fashionistas, the best designer consignment store.
HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER – AN IMMEDIATE SUCCESS
After studying fashion design at Parson's School of Design, Hilfiger moved to New York City to pursue his dream of making his own clothing as a fashion designer. In 1985, he launched his first signature collection with support from Mohan Murjani of Murjani Brands. Thus, the world was introduced to Tommy Hilfiger. Bringing legendary ad man George Lois onboard was also a plus, as was his idea to put the brand on a billboard in the center of New York’s Times Square.
The Tommy Hilfiger label was an instant success. By the early 1990s, Hilfiger's clothing was being sold in major department stores across the United States, and currently at True Fashionistas consignment store, Naples. His clean-cut aesthetic resonated with consumers, and his ability to mix classic pieces with more modern silhouettes appealed to a wide range of True Fashionista customers. In 1995, Hilfiger debuted his first fragrance, which quickly became one of the best-selling perfumes in America. From there, he expanded into other areas including luggage, home furnishings, and an award-winning line of jeanswear.
HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER – DESIGNER TO THE MUSICIANS
By the 1990s, Hilfiger was the True Fashionista designer to the music stars, dressing everyone from Snoop Doggy Dogg to Lenny Kravitz and the late Aaliyah. In 1999, he was named a main sponsor of singer Britney Spears on her debut tour.
HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER - A DEVOTED FOLLOWING
Throughout his career, Tommy Hilfiger has remained true to his roots, creating clothing that is both classic and modern. His devoted following includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood; everyone from Beyonce to Oprah has been spotted wearing his designs. In 2010, Hilfiger even received the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), cementing his place as one of America's most iconic designers.
HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER – PHILANTHROPY
In 1995, Hilfiger founded The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation, which aimed to improve the lives of youth through cultural and education programs. He is also a long time JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) supporter, raising thousands for the fight against this debilitating and oife-threatening disease. More recently, the company partnered with Calvin Klein for the Fashion Climate Fund to help the initiative achieve its aim of encouraging the industry away from the use of fossil fuels.
