KEEPING UP WITH PANT TRENDS
Fall is roaring back and it has us thinking about…pants! Those of us who get to deal with winter on a more personal basis know the importance of keeping a collection of two-legged True Fashionista wonders each season; in warmer environs they’re merely an option. Either way, it’s good to know what to look for this year to go with your Madden Girls and Vejas.
LEATHER
There’s just no looking dated when it comes to leather pants. Whether you go eco-conscious with faux-leather, or stick to the real deal, leather is what it is and that’s trés cool. Pair your Frame le Minis with a cashmere sweater and booties. Go rock n roll with biker leather and graphic tee, or step out in a color that is NOT black like Lafayette 148 New York’s vicuna leather jeans or Isabel Marant silver metallics. For your no-guilt faux tendencies, look no further than The Kooples. Not your weird next-door neighbors but a hip French label, The Kooples offers a foolproof faux, as does Marina Rinaldi. Be it tight or loose, there are a ton of newer styles to discover.
HIGH-WAISTED
The high-waisted trouser is back from the 80’s, and ready to kill it in your True Fashionista wardrobe this fall. “High-waisted flares are especially nice for those wanting to create an elongated shape. Just make sure you tailor the length so there isn’t any bunching at the bottom,” says Colleen Babul, stylist operations manager for Snap+Style Business, a fashion tech company that helps brands connect with their customers online. It’s always nice to see how today’s designers take older trends and retool them for 2019, and this look has gotten a pleasant makeover, courtesy of designers like Skiim, Nanushka and Alexandre Vauthier. And hey, Gucci’s still cranking the high-waisters as well, with a nice take on a hot trend, the paperbag waist.
CINCHED
Be looking for cinched pants this fall. Suits featuring ankle-cinched pants are a thing, utilizing a variety of ways to cinch that leg, be it sash, buckle, or wiry tie. In a September fashion preview for the Chicago Tribune, Melissa Magsaysay writes how cinching even at the midriff of one’s suit using a skinny belt is a hit. Amo takes the cinch to another level with their black-tie ankle jeans, as does Reformation with their Avalon pant. Once fall starts teetering on winter, you can slip into cozy straight-leg pants from Noir Kei Ninomiya made from ruffled wool-gabardine. Tibi hits the cinch as well with drawstring-gathered trousers.
JEANS
We won’t sleep if we don’t talk about jeans, that wardrobe staple that easily adjusts for the season. A mélange of jeans styles are all the rage at the moment, including quite a few throwbacks. For example, jeans rock the 90’s with a slouchy skinny look, such as the Ami jeans featured on a recent Today Show segment. The Amis have extra fabric at the bottom to give them that slouch. Best advice? Wear them with heels. Low-rise jeans are back as well, only now with more comfortable, stretchier material. Amo Denim would rather call them “low slung”, since their version is not so low that you need special underwear, says Amo co-founders co-founders Kelly Urban and Misty Zollars,”It feels effortless and relaxed, like the type of jeans you could wear all day no matter what you’re doing.” And Prada’s feather-trimmed boyfriend jeans make a True Fashionista statement all their own. They’re the latest in an ongoing infatuation Prada’s had with feathers for a couple years now.
CORDUROY
The past keeps cropping up this season, and indeed, corduroy is BACK, and this time some have a flare, like Akris Flore cotton and cashmere-blend pants. Slim-leg corduroys in gorgeous hues are a thing, too, as designers like Apiece Apart and Marc Jacobs show us.
ANIMAL PRINTS
The animals are among us! We saw ‘em on the runways, and now you’ll find ‘em on the streets…animal print pants that is. Miaou Lou cow print pants have a jacket to match, and you don’t want to miss Atti’s Croc-Effect leather tapered pants. These just encompass the group that is hipness in pants this fall.
