After being canceled in 2020 and pushed back to September in 2021, the 2022 Met Gala, with all its glitz and glamour in full resplendence, returned to its cherished First Monday in May with the dress code of “Gilded Glamour, White Tie.” To further explain, attendees were encouraged to approach late 19th-century clothing through a modern lens. Many of our cherished True Fashionista designers created one-of-a-kind attire to adorn the A-listers who attended the fundraiser of the year.
We pause for just a moment to share that this year’s Gala raised a record $17.4 million for the self-funding Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The money pays for operating the Institute and putting on annual blockbuster exhibits like the current “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” launched at the Gala. That exhibit is part of a broader two-part exhibit exploring the roots of American fashion. MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – PETE DAVIDSON AND KIM KARDASHIAN
With Pete by her side clad in a sleek Dior Men suit, Ms. Kardashian stole the show (once again) dressed in the very same True Fashionista Jean Louis gown worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 for her legendary rendition of Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy. As she shared with Vogue, the process of obtaining and fitting into the gown was not so easy. The dress arrived complete with armed guards and handlers wearing gloves. Then she discovered that the dress didn’t fit and told the dress owners to give her three weeks, in which time Ms. K. essentially gave up eating (lol) and amazingly dropped 16 pounds to get into it.
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – EMMA CORRIN
Clad in a top hat, custom Miu Miu outfit, and Cartier jewelry, The Crown actor is obvs a fan. They also sported a True Fashionista Miu Miu outfit (also custom designed) to the 2021 Emmys. The historical reference made by Corrin in 2022 was an homage to the King of Dudes, Evander Berry Wall, a New York City socialite renowned for his sartorial extravagance in the 1880s. According to legend, Wall was known to often change outfits no less than 40 times in one day!
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – NICKI MINAJ
Rapper Nicki Minaj full-on rocked it in a feathery Burberry bustier gown, leather leggings, and matching baseball cap. Complete with gemstones applied all over her arms, chest, and face, Minaj perilously walked the line of near-wardrobe malfunction due to the gown’s slightly-too-small bustier more than adequately doing its job. True Fashionistas, the best designer consignment store, carries a large selection of Burberry.
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – GABRIELLE UNION
The actor and FitOn spokesperson represented the Met Gala theme in a True Fashionista silver Versace gown, complete with a plunging neckline accentuated by a bright red flower sitting on her waist. The flower itself was pinned above a cascading white-feathered train. Beneath the dress, Union’s footwear of choice was courtesy of none other than Jimmy Choo. Find your fave Jimmy Choos at True Fashionistas consignment store, Naples.
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – CIARA
The singer threw down for the red carpet, sporting a pair of gorgeous Jimmy Choos. However, the shoes were but the icing on the glamour cake, as the real centerpiece was her show-stopping metallic, zebra-print dress with a hip-high slit designed by Michael Kors. This was not the first time she turned heads at the Gala. In 2021, Ciara had a designer transform her husband Russell Wilson’s neon green Seattle Seahawks jersey into a dress! In 2019, she rocked a True Fashionista sparkling emerald-colored dress.
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – TORY BURCH
When you’re a celebrity designer, you wear, um, YOU, to the Met Gala. Such is the case with the True Fashionista Tory Burch. Not only was she represented by several stars, including Kerry Washington and Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney on the red carpet; she also appeared in a black and white number she custom designed.
MET GALA 2022 CELEBRITY OVERVIEW AND THEIR DESIGNERS TOO – SARAH JESSICA PARKER
A Met Gala attendee since 1995, Ms. Parker commits a good 7-10 months to each annual event, working with designers to make sure her True Fashionista outfit fits the theme just so. For 2022’s Gilded Glamour theme, Parker’s Christopher John Rogers-designed outfit paid homage to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, who quietly made history as the first Black female fashion designer in the White House.
A former slave who moved from Virginia to D.C. in 1860, Keckley became the official dressmaker to first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, as well as dressing many of Washington’s socialites. Parker’s outfit, a black and white fitted top, ballgown skirt, and petite veiled fascinator, also featured True Fashionista Swarovski-crystal buttons. Rogers told Vogue, “We took the idea of a small gingham and really blew it up.”
