STREETWEAR FASHION

It’s always fascinating when high fashion draws from the raw looks of places unexpected to create the next True Fashionista trend for the runways and beyond. Last fall, designers tapped into what was happening at street level and brought it to the runways, so that we may enjoy these somewhat casual looks during the carefree days of summer. Streetwear has been a boys’ game for years now, what with athletic wear, designer sneakers and hoodies of all colors, but this year women get theirs. The streets just got much hipper, people!

Vogue notes that the 60’s have reared its proud head again with hemlines heading nowhere but up. The miniskirt has returned with a vengeance thanks to the likes of Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Stella McCartney. The mini 50 years later shows off a variety of prints, shapes, patent leather, denim and suede. Questioning what pairs best with your newly-purchased mini? Make sure you’ve got appropriate footwear like sporty sneakers, brogues, Oxfords, kitten heels or slip-on shoes, says Fashiontrendwalk. And don’t be afraid to go for a printed mini, which shows off a bit of personality. Want to keep it edgy? Straight up leather mini will do the trick. Pair that bad boy with a graphic tank top or casual button-down shirt and hit the street in True Fashionista style.

Speaking of the leather mini, street pretty much brings the image of the color black to mind, and let’s just defy typical summer bright hues for a moment and get in our heads that this season black is IT. The runways were full of creations that somehow were able to make black even hipper than it already is. Asymmetrical LBDs, tulle frocks, leather harnesses (yes really) and furry black accessories are all the rage at the moment. Or be like Rihanna and rock a Fenty black leather jumpsuit, as she so fittingly did at the 2019 BET awards.

Rihanna has also been seen wearing Seoul-based label Hyein Seo, a streetwear brand established in 2014 by the South Korean designer of the same name. Hyein Seo has a knack for perfectly combining the best elements of women’s and men’s clothing, and its 2019 collection, inspired by Street Fightercharacter Chun Li, evokes a utilitarian view of today’s athleisure look.

Things are also a bit wild this summer with the resurgence of animal prints. Granted, they’re always pretty much in the picture but the limelight is on them in a big way this season. Items like Dolce & Gabbana’s retro glamourous asymmetric dress and Longchamp’s mix of animal prints and fringing embraced the animal kingdom with prints such as python, zebra and of course leopard. Many labels went for the head-to-toe look, while others simply designed accessories. Think your cool black ensemble matched with Burberry python gloves, Saint Laurent leopard-print shoes, or a True Fashionista Longchamp leopard purse.

Streetwear also conjures a sense of the easy, everyday, get-up-and-go looks we all need at 6:15am. (What, you mean you don’t work out at 4:30?) Everyday elegance comprised of a sleek blazer, simple button-down shirt and classy trousers makes its statement on the streets this summer. On fall runways, it was pegged as “realistic”. Models and editors were happy for this one, given a jampacked typical routine of fashion shows, appointments, meetings and parties for often many days in a row.

Polish designer duo Natalia and Kate offer up a sense of individuality and raw emotion this summer with a range of offerings in their MISBHV women’s collection. You’ll kill the street in their stuff ranging from logo hoodie and belt bang to classy jewelry that stands out in a crowd.

As the weather people love to say, it’s gonna be another scorcher, so consider yourself True Fashionista ready to hit the streets this summer. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
