WHY TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET NOW

Well of course, New Year, fresh start, etc. Now that you’ve committed to that gym membership and keto diet, kick start the positive vibes by doing something grand at home: Cleaning out your closet! As Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizingfamously said, “The best criterion for choosing what to keep and what to discard is whether keeping it will make you happy, whether it will bring you joy.” Yes, joy may be the single greatest reason to clean out your closet, but plain, old True Fashionista lookin’ good is most definitely another.

No matter what your New Year’s resolutions are, they should probably also include the fact that you want to look as good as you can doing them (i.e. I want to make as much money as possible this year and look as good as possible doing it). Cleaning out your closet means the creation of new outfits, the rediscovery of old pieces, a potential shopping trip (to True Fashionistas Resale?), and less last-minute, subpar outfits thanks to a neglected closet. When you look good, you’ll feel more confident and prepared to take on those ambitious resolutions.

Once you’ve taken Ms. Kondo’s first step, literally throwing everything, and we mean everything, in a pile on the floor (yes, do it), pick up each piece and first decide if it brings you joy or not. Take whatever ranks around a 2 or above on the joy scale, and sort them into four piles, as suggested by jolynneshane.com:

  • LOVE IT: If it is appropriate for the current season, and you absolutely love it and want to put it on right this second, hang it back in your closet.
  • MAYBE: Is the fit a bit off? The color? Are you keeping it just because it has sentimental value, or because you paid a lot for it and feel guilty getting rid of it? Put it in a box and store it. If you find yourself wishing you had it, you can always go retrieve it. But if you don’t find yourself wanting it before the end of the season, it’s time to donate it and let someone else enjoy it. If you’re not used to purging, this can be hard to do, but I promise you, it is SO freeing!
  • HATE IT: Self explanatory. Donate or sell to fund new purchases.
  • SEASONAL: If it’s not in season, but you LOVE IT (and I mean LOVE IT), put it in a box and store it so you can add it to your wardrobe when the proper season rolls around.

If you have a huge closet and a ton of clothes, you may want to group the above process into tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, etc.  If parting ways with a pile of once-awesome clothing is still taxing you with indecision, try establishing a “maybe” section, albeit a small one, and go through it often. And take your time, suggests Lauren Greutman. There’s no need to rush-purge; this is your wardrobe, and you want to downsize correctly. She also points out that you shouldn’t own more clothing than you have space to store it.

Check with Marie Kondo on storage tips too, she’s got some great ideas!

Best of all, cleaning out your closet can be the motivation to go shopping! If you’ve rid your closet of key pieces that got old or outdated, then you must go find some more, right?  Now you have room, be sure to stop into True Fashonistas Resale to get the highest quality designer items.
